Dr. Giulia Di Rauso, PhD student in Clinical and Experimental Medicine at UniMoRe, with clinical-assistance integration at the Neurology Unit of the Arcispedale Santa Maria Nuova in Reggio Emilia, won the “Final Clinical Tournament” at the 11th Congress of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN), held in Helsinki from June 21 to 24, 2025.

Dr. Di Rauso was awarded by EAN—the leading scientific society for neurology in Europe—for her contribution titled: “LRRK2-related PD: Hints at increased cancer risk”.

The study, conducted on 500 Parkinson’s disease patients who underwent genetic screening, revealed a higher prevalence of cancer in patients carrying a specific variant of the LRRK2 gene compared to non-carriers.

If confirmed by further studies, this finding could open new clinical perspectives, including targeted cancer screening programs for these patients, in addition to specific treatments for Parkinson’s disease.
